sayings of the Buddha

“The thought manifests as the word;
The word manifests as the deed;
The deed develops into habit;
And habit hardens into character;
So watch the thought and its way with care;
And let it spring from love
Born out of concern for all beings…

As the shadow follows the body,
as we think, so we become.”

-From the Dhammapada
(sayings of the Buddha)

Taoist Lau Tsu

“If you want to shirk something, you must first allow it to expand.”  Said by Taoist Lau Tsu and probably means something like in order to solve anything you first must let it manifest.  Only in its true state can it be settled.

Isn’t that so neat.  I am going to put it somewhere on my bodhi buddha website.

dzogchen weekly words of wisdom

Just passing on the weekly wisdom from dzogchen.org……

Since everything is but an apparition,

Perfect in being what it is,

Having nothing to do with good or bad,

Acceptance or rejection,

You might as well burst out laughing.

-Longchenpa

because i really like this quote…

The reason lightning doesn’t strike twice in the same place is that the same place isn’t there the second time.

This was part of the weekly words of wisdom emailed to the subscribers of Lama Surya Das.

soledad

interesting article about Tibetan protests

Tibetan protests have come to light due to the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.  The British PM has announce he will not attend opening ceremony due to the recent fiasco of protesters attacking the Olympic torch in London.  While the Olympics should just be about athletics and having the absolute best competitors compete it seems it always has political unrest.  I found an interesting article about a recent monk protest.  You can read it here.  Never underestimate the value of freedom.

de clutter your life

De cluttering your life is a great step on the road to letting  go.  While it is hard to go from having possessions and to do lists that control you to having nothing.  There are some interesting web sites that have some good ideas on how to de clutter aspects of your life.  They are Lifehacker and Zen Habits.

Remember it is not a task goal orientated of declutterification but a process that you should enjoy and feel liberated.

Today while working I listened to the Podcast Typical Mac User Podcast #73: Life Hacking with Steven Stanger.  Below are some of the notes I picked out.

Uninstall unused programs

Clean up desktop (desk desktop and computer desktop)

Archive non daily used files (take out of documents folder and put in an external hard drive) archive nostalgia.

Limit email time (you may need to re-train the people around you of the fact that there is a phone or they can also walk to your desk if they want an instant response.)

Transcribes what you narrate and can update to twitter or a blog. Jott.com

Three Rules of Work: Out of clutter find simplicity; From discord find harmony; In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity.” - Albert Einstein

Goal setting is an evolution of ideas not an answer.

Bodhi

The word Bodhi means to be enlightened or awakened.  Thus the tree that people meditated under became known as the Bodhi tree.

goal

I came across a great concept in my studies that has helped me a lot.  I cant remember who said it.  Later I will update this post and give credit to the originator.

When you feel disconnected from someone because you don’t understand how their actions can lead them on any sort of positive path, a good attitude or concept to keep in your mind always is that everyone else has the same goal; they are just trying to accomplish it a different way.

present company included only

In my readings one retreat leader explains an exercise that he does at every retreat.  He urges people not to talk about anyone else.  Nothing.  All of us have heard that we should not talk negatively about someone but most of us thought it was ok to say nice things about someone else.  The key to the exercise is to realize how much we talk about other people, good and even bad.

Sometimes it is just safer to talk about someone we both mutually know.  Eases the focus off talking about ourselves.  It might also prevent us from being honest with people we know and with ourselves.

Try it for yourself.  If a person is not in present company, don’t talk about them.  Maybe this will enhance your relationships and make all of us acknowledge how close we all really are.

Lama Surya Das

I am currently reading Eight Steps to Enlightenment: Awakening the Buddha Within by Lama Surya Das. I love the book. He calls it Tibetan wisdom for the western world. His web site is at http://www.dzogchen.org.
